What Is a Cannes Lions Grand Prix?

The Cannes Lions Grand Prix is the highest award in the creative industry. Very few pieces of work ever win one. Here is what it is, and what it takes.

The Cannes Lions Grand Prix is the top prize at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, the world's most recognised awards for creative and brand work. Within each category, juries award Bronze, Silver, and Gold Lions, but only the single best entry in a category is named Grand Prix. It is the work the industry holds up as the benchmark for the year.

A Grand Prix is rare for a reason. It is not given for a beautiful execution alone, but for an idea that redefines what its category can be, backed by craft and, increasingly, by results. For a brand, work at this level signals more than taste. It signals that an agency can produce ideas strong enough to be studied internationally.

Understanding the Grand Prix

We know this standard because we have met it. In 2014, the strategic rebranding of Festspillene i Bergen, the Bergen International Festival, was awarded the Cannes Lions Grand Prix in Design. The work was done under ANTI Bergen and Trondheim, which has since become Nonspace, so this is our team's work and our heritage.

The Festspillene i Bergen identity solved a real problem: a festival spanning classical, contemporary, and folk art needed one visual language that could speak for all of it without flattening any of it. The answer was a dynamic identity built on a strict mathematical framework, structured like music itself, that functioned as logo, advertising, and living pattern at once.

Beyond the Grand Prix in Design, the work took a Grand Prix in Brand Identity at Red Dot, two Golds at ADC Global, a Gold Pencil at One Show, and Best of Show at the European Design Awards, making it one of the most internationally awarded brand identities of its year.
