Kunstsilo wanted to strengthen its connection with children and families by creating a distinct visual identity for Kunstsilo Kids.

About the project
Kunstsilo is a contemporary art museum located in Kristiansand, housed in a transformed 1930s grain silo on the island of Odderøya. The museum brings together the Sørlandet Art Museum, Kristianssands Picture Gallery, and the Tangen Collection, one of the world's largest collections of Nordic modernist art. With its bold architectural redesign and a mix of exhibitions, digital installations, and cultural events, Kunstsilo has become a dynamic hub for art, design, and community in Southern Norway.
Kunstsilo wanted to strengthen its connection with children and families by creating a distinct visual identity for Kunstsilo Kids, aimed at audiences aged 0–13. The ambition was to take young visitors seriously as an audience group, crafting experiences that inspire curiosity, learning, and creative expression.
Nonspace developed a complete sub-identity including a mascot, activity concept, and playful visual system that connects seamlessly with Kunstsilo’s main brand while speaking directly to children. The result is a vibrant and engaging platform that brings the museum’s spirit to life across print, digital, and spatial experiences — encouraging the next generation to see art as something to explore, touch and enjoy.
Kunstsilo’s main identity, while elegant and architectural, needed an adaptable counterpart that could resonate with children without diluting the museum’s sophistication.
The challenge was to build a visual world for kids that felt intelligent, inclusive and timeless. It had to work for multiple age groups (0–13), across formats from booklets to installations, while staying recognisably part of the Kunstsilo brand.
The museum also sought to make the family experience more intuitive and memorable, creating communication tools and activities that could invite exploration and conversation between children and adults.
Our approach was rooted in the same values that define Kunstsilo — creativity, discovery and quality — translated into a language children naturally understand: play.
We developed a flexible visual identity with bold shapes, bright colours and two distinctive mascots. Designed in 2D, with expressive eyes and gestures, the character became the friendly guide through the Kunstsilo Kids universe.
To support the identity, Nonspace designed:
- A Kids’ Activity Booklet for 5–6-year-olds, encouraging creative thinking through drawing, puzzles and interactive storytelling.
- A concept for an interactive display wall, combining modular design, safety and tactile engagement.
- SoMe templates for the museum’s internal team, ensuring their family communication stays vibrant and on brand.
Every element was built to inspire participation not just passive viewing, making art approachable, personal and fun.
The new identity and tools give Kunstsilo a lasting platform for engaging families, proving that when children are treated as genuine visitors rather than an add-on audience, they respond with imagination, insight and joy.
Kunstsilo Kids has become a cornerstone of Kunstsilo’s public offering — a visual and experiential framework that grows with the museum’s programmes.
The initiative helps position Kunstsilo as one of Scandinavia’s most family-friendly art destinations, fostering early connections between children and art through design that sparks curiosity and confidence.
