Kunstsilo set out to create a digital experience that reflects the museum's energy and ambition. The result is a flexible, content-rich platform that stands as a destination in its own right.
Highlights

About the project
Kunstsilo is a contemporary art museum located in Kristiansand, housed in a transformed 1930s grain silo on the island of Odderøya. The museum brings together the Sørlandet Art Museum, Kristianssands Picture Gallery, and the Tangen Collection, one of the world's largest collections of Nordic modernist art. With its bold architectural redesign and a mix of exhibitions, digital installations, and cultural events, Kunstsilo has become a dynamic hub for art, design, and community in Southern Norway.
Kunstsilo is a landmark institution in Southern Norway, known for its significant collection of Nordic modernist art and its role as a vibrant arena for contemporary cultural life. With its transformation into one of the region's most engaging destinations for exhibitions, events, and education, Kunstsilo needed a digital presence that would do more than inform, it needed to inspire, convert, and connect.
Nonspace was brought in to create a visually stunning, editorially rich, and highly functional digital platform that would serve both as a practical tool and a cultural beacon, one that could stand on its own as a destination, not just a companion to the physical museum.
Built on Sanity CMS, the platform allows the Kunstsilo team to manage both the public website and the museum's internal screens from a single, flexible system, making storytelling and communication cohesive, consistent, and efficient.
Kunstsilo's ambition was to build a digital experience that could:
- Engage a wide range of audiences, from local families to international art lovers, from schools classes to sponsors.
- Inspire repeat visits with a calendar and homepage that reflects a museum always in motion.
- Provide value before, during, and after a physical visit, while also serving users who may never set foot in the building.
- Reflect Kunstsilo's identity as a cultural innovator, with the website as a powerful first impression.
- Support ticket sales, memberships, donations, venue hire, and in-museum services like café and store.
- Function as a content-rich hub, combining fixed informational pages with dynamic editorial content and evolving media.
- Empower internal teams with a streamlined backend for quick updates, flexible templates, and integrated workflows.
The digital platform needed to reflect not just what Kunstsilo is, but what it is becoming.
We delivered a bold, modular website architecture that balances clarity, creativity, and commercial effectiveness. At its core is Sanity CMS, a flexible, headless system that enables editors to create, update, and publish content across the website and in-museum screens, all from one place.
The site is designed as a destination in itself, with regularly updated content, a dynamic calendar, and rich editorial storytelling that keeps users returning. The experience is intuitive to navigate for every visitor type, whether they're looking to buy a ticket, explore an exhibition, learn about an artist, plan a school trip, or browse a museum media from home.
Content is organised into a layered structure that supports both:
- Fixed content: Practical visitor information, museum history, collection overviews, and institutional information.
- Dynamic content: Event listings, editorial articles, media features, artist interviews, and real-time screen updates within the museum.
The backend is designed to scale, with custom content models, third-party integrations (ticketing, collections, scheduling), and reusable modules that support future features or campaign needs.
With Brandspace Displayer, Kunstsilo's internal team can manage playlists, segment screen content by location, and update displays instantly. Whether a visitor is walking into the entrance or standing in front of a featured artwork, the messaging is relevant and current, all powered from the same CMS.
The new digital platform reinforces Kunstsilo's position as a leading cultural institution in the Nordic region, accessible, innovative, and deeply connected to the community it serves.
- The website now functions as a true cultural hub, offering content for those visiting today, planning ahead, or simply curious from afar.
- It invites users back regularly with a constantly evolving front page and an editorial flow that mirrors the energy of the museum's program.
- Ticket sales, memberships, and in-house services are easier to access and promote, supporting Kunstsilo's commercial and engagement goals.
- Internal teams are empowered by a single, streamlined content system, saving time and reducing duplication.
- The platform supports institutional storytelling, making it easier to attract and retain sponsors, donors, and partners by highlighting impact, reach, and values.
Whether online or on-site, Kunstsilo's brand now lives as a cohesive, living system, responsive to the needs of today's audiences and ready to grow into the future.
